Whether you've been into sustainable fashion for years or you've just been introduced to it, the notion can feel daunting. How does one avoid this feeling? Talk about it! Through shared advice, tips, and tricks, the concept of sustainability becomes both digestible and obtainable.
In the spirit of knowledge being power, GALERIE.LA asked Kennedy and Morgan Mason, founders of the Greenverse and passionate environmental change agents, their advice on sustainable fashion.
What was the best piece of fashion advice you've ever received?
K: Morgan always tells me "If you think it's sick, no one can ever tell you otherwise!" so that's kind of what I go by nowadays.
What are your top two picks from GALERIE.LA's new arrivals?
The Essential Midi Dress and Life Ring, both ethical and edgy:
What's your go-to outfit?
K: Bodycon or slip dress and a faux fur jacket! And a mini bag. I love mini bags!
M: Black jeans, fitted vintage tee with the sleeves rolled up and tucked in, cool belt, pants chain, white socks, classic black low pro vans, gold chains. And my NASA hoodie!
What does being sustainable mean to you?
K: We think being "susty," as we like to call it, is really all about implementing small changes where you can for the greater good: the planet, animals, other human beings. There is no one, perfect way to be susty, but everyone can participate, even if it is one vegan meal a week, or skipping your straw at Starbucks.
M: Living with a sense of coexistence instead of dominance; finding our place within the global eco system instead of trying to dominate naturally occurring processes.
What tips would you give to someone trying to achieve a more sustainable life?
K: Start small; try thrifting instead of cheap fast fashion, buy a to-go mug for your morning coffee and dine in at restaurants and cafes when you can. Use up old products before purchasing new ones! And don't give up if it seems too hard to be 100% vegan or zero waste; all efforts count, no matter how small.
M: Don't take it all on at once. If you feel like you are missing out, it's too expensive, or you aren't having fun, you're doing it wrong! Susty living can be amazing, find what works for you.
